There was hardly an event or family gathering where my Grandma didn’t have a margarita or a glass of wine in her hand. Today would have been my Grandma’s 80th birthday if she were still with us. But I know that she is here in spirit and would want us to celebrate properly.

I left the drink making to the experts and made a trio of trifles instead of a birthday cake. From left to right we have a tequila key lime, chocolate fudge (which isn’t really a drink, but who doesnt like chocolate) and pina colada flavor.

Here’s to you G’Ma, I love you and miss you so much.

The Cake Crusader is back baby!!

Busy busy busy. That’s been my 2014 thus far. But not busy enough to not make something delicious once in a while. Seriously, nothing make me happier than when I’m in the kitchen. So why don’t I just quit everything else and do that all the time? well it’s rather complicated and is probably going to be one of the major chapters in my memoir someday so let’s just put that aside for now.

Anywho, I need to bake more and I already have plans to. I’ve finally got a job that gives me the chance to earn some experience in the food world, some new toys to play with, I’m even looking at information about getting certified to sell candies and sweets out of my home so I can start a business that way (thanks California).

2014 is gonna be the year of the Cake Crusader.

The BF’s sister called in for help in making her boyfriend a birthday cake. Being an avid beer lover and bartender, we decided that beer had to be the theme.

After the fact it dawned on me that I should have used beer in the cake itself, but c’est la vie. She wanted a simple cake though…well flavor wise.

And yeah, yeah I know Guinness isn’t that color, but we had a last minute change of plans. By that I mean the beer we chose originally came in a bottle, but was way too heavy to be supported by the dowel so we swapped it out with a can of Guinness.

Still though this is awesome and I’m happy with how it turned out especially considering that I don’t normally work with fondant (it could have been smoother I know, but hey, I gotta start somewhere)

Ghirardelli Caramel Hot Chocolate
There’s nothing better than a cup of hot chocolate. Except for maybe chocolate and caramel hot chocolate! The recipe is simple enough: just some Ghirardelli chocolate squares mixed with half and half. Other chocolates and flavors could work as well and I definitely intend on trying them out!

Getting back in the kitchen

Midterms, papers and projects are done for now. Thank the Gods and Goddesses. With plenty of free time for this 3 day weekend and cool weather I think I’m gonna make some fancy hot chocolate.

Thinking of making some cookies n’cream treats this weekend in honor of my team at the DLush casting call.

It’s Halloween Time!

There’s nothing like October and fall flavors to break you out of your funk! Pumpkin Smashes are back and PSL’s are a plenty so i guess i should get to work on my fall favorites:

  • pumpkin chocolate cake
  • pumpkin pecan crunch
  • butternut squash soup (yeah, it’s not a dessert, but it’s so freaking delicious)
  • pumpkin cream puffs
  • haunted gingerbread houses

ok so it’s mostly pumpkin, but hey pumpkin is delicious and you know it!

In terms of nerdy theme desserts, i’ve been toying with candy making and i reeeaaly want to make truffles inspired by The Endless from Neil Gaiman’s Sandman. Each Endless will have their own special flavor. Also I plan on making some Fish Fingers and Custard Doctor Who for the 50th Anniversary. But now i’m getting ahead of myself

in a bit of a funk…

a baking funk to be precise.

i haven’t made anything new in a while and just keep repeating old recipes like the salted caramel butter bars, german apple cake and my everything-but-the-kitchen-sink cookies. not that that’s a bad thing, i mean they are delicious.

but i have a slew of ideas and things i want to make, things is i only know how to bake in large quantities and dont know how i’d get rid of all the things i’d make.

that and funds. funds are important
